Messi Pups shares their top tips and tricks to help your pup feel a little less spooked this
Bonfire Night.

How to keep your dog calm on fireworks night

Hiya, I’m Messi - Chief Sniffing Officer at Messi Pups. Like most dugs, I hate fireworks. All the loud fizzes and bangs make me feel like there’s pure danger aboot. Luckily, my humans know some handy tips tae keep me nice n’ chilled when they kick aff. Have a wee read below.

1. Keep your dogs indoors

Even if your pup’s used to being outside, the loud noises can make them panic and even bolt out the door. So, it’s a good idea to keep all your windows and doors shut in case they decide to make a break for it!

Messi’s Gear Tip: Our Minky Dot blankets are big enough for a double bed, so the whole fam can cosy up together if your dog’s feeling spooked.

2. Pop on some background noise

Try drowning out the sound of fireworks with some background noise. Soft music, TV, or even some white noise can help calm your dog’s nerves.

3. Keep calm

You’ll probably have noticed that dogs are very perceptive! They pick up on even the smallest change in your emotions. So, the calmer you are, the more likely they will be too. Act natural around them and stay playful - and if they just want to hide, let them do their thing.

4. Create a cosy corner

When it comes to keeping dogs calm during fireworks, nothing beats a cosy wee corner. Lay down their favourite fluffy blanket and toys. Just make sure it’s away from the windows and doors so they’re less likely to see or hear the bangs.

Messi’s Gear Tip: Our Sherpa blankets are perfectly pup-sized for a snug and safe space.

4. Desensitisation techniques

It may sound a little bit sci-fi, but playing recorded firework sounds on low and then increasing the volume over time can help your pup get used to the noise. Just make sure to speak to a professional dog trainer if you decide to try this out.

6. Consult your vet

If you notice your dog is particularly fearful of fireworks, it might be time to speak with your vet. They can give you advice or prescribe medication to help your pup stay calm in stressful situations.

7. Identification

Make sure your dog’s wearing a collar with proper ID tags, including your contact info. If they do end up escaping out of fear, having proper ID will help make sure they get home safely.

Messi’s Gear Tip: Make sure to pop a Dog Tag on your collar in case we go runnin’ aff – we personalise them for free!

8. Tire your dog out
