Best Dog Walks in Scotland (According to Messi)

By Messi Pups

I’m Messi, the official Chief Sniffing Officer at Messipups, and I live just outside Glasgow wi’ my humans. I spend most of my days testin’ harnesses, chasin’ sticks, bossin’ my owners aboot, and scoutin’ out the best dog walks in Scotland. It’s a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it!

If you're lookin' for the best dog walks in Scotland, let me show you my favourite places to stretch ma legs, roll in who-knows-what, and soak up some serious views. I’m only wee, so I can’t say I’ve tackled all of these, but my fellow fluffy friends agree! But before we get started, let’s talk about what we are looking for…

What Makes a Great Dog Walk in Scotland?

When it comes to finding the best dog walks in Scotland, it’s no’ just about the views (though we do love a bonnie backdrop). A top-notch dog friendly walk has plenty of space for off-lead roaming, safe and well-marked paths, and ideally a river, loch, or beach for a quick dip. Bonus points if there are dog-friendly facilities nearby – think parking, bins, picnic spots, or even a café that welcomes muddy paws. Whether you're in the Highlands or the heart of the city, a truly great dog walk keeps my tails waggin’, noses twitchin’, and even my humans happy too!

1. Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire

This place is pure class – big open trails, ancient trees, and a castle that looks like somethin’ oot a fairy tale. Castle Fraser is one of the top dog friendly walks in Scotland, wi’ loads of space tae have a proper runaboot, and tons of good sniffs in the woods. A top countryside stomping ground.wi’ loads of space tae have a proper runaboot, and tons of good sniffs in the woods. A top countryside stomping ground.

Messi’s Gear Tip: Fit right in wi' the other fluffy locals by wearing our Hairy Coo-Ture range!

2. Luskentyre Beach, Isle of Harris

Now this is a beach. When ma paws hit the white sand and I see that turquoise water, I go full zoomies mode. It’s like the Maldives… if the Maldives had sheep and a wee bit of wind. One of the absolute best dog walks in Scotland for sandy paws and salty sniffs.

Messi’s Gear Tip: Get the full beachy look with one of our stylish bandanas!

3. Inverleith Park, Edinburgh

Big field? Check. Loads of other dogs? Check. Top spot for chasin’ a ball and people-watchin’? Double check. This park is great for a quick city wander or a longer game of fetch. If you're lookin' for dog friendly walks in the capital, this one’s a must. Plus, it's got crackin’ views of that massive castle!

Messi’s Gear Tip: Get the check of approval from the city slickers with our Up The Toon range!

4. Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh

Get ready for a bit of a climb, but trust me – the views at the top are worth every pawstep. Arthur’s seat proper adventure, wi’ grassy paths, windy corners, and perfect posing spots. Easily one of the most iconic dog walks in Scotland, especially if you’ve got energy tae burn.

Messi’s Gear Tip: Don’t be that guy who leaves a mess in this tourist spot — check out our Poop Bag Holders: cute and convenient!

5. The Hermitage, Dunkeld (Perthshire)

This place is like walkin’ through a storybook. Tall trees, waterfalls, river trails – it's magic. Ideal for a calm wander or a shady summer escape. If you're after a peaceful, scenic stroll, The Hermitage is one of the top dog friendly walks in Scotland. Plus, Dunkeld is pretty special too – maybe even pick yerself up a puppuccino after!

Messi’s Gear Tip: With too much exploring to be done, comes the risk of us wee dugs runnin’ aff. Be sure to pop a Dug Tag on your collar — we personalise them for free!

6. Balmedie Beach, Aberdeenshire

Big skies, rollin’ dunes, and loads of space for top-speed zooms. Balmedie is a digger’s dream, and there’s usually nae too many folk about, so I get the run of the place. A hidden gem and easily one of the best dog walks in Scotland for a beach day.

Messi’s Gear Tip: A sliperoo of a harness is sometimes common at the beach, especially if we get a bitty damp. Our harnesses are fully adjustable!

7. The Fairy Glen, Isle of Skye

This place is just bonkers – wee green hills, spirals of stone, and a tiny loch. It’s a short walk but pure magic. Perfect if you're lookin’ for a wee wander that’s still one of the most unique dog friendly walks in Scotland. You feel like you’re in another world — just mind the sheep.

Messi’s Gear Tip: You won’t be wantin’ a smelly wet dug in your car on the way home. Our collars are totally breathable, perfect for when a swimming opportunity pops up!
